Structure of the Library

Welcome to www.W-W-I.com, a downloadable online image library. The library is organised into individual client areas, displaying the client’s images in separate galleries; however it is possible to view more than one client’s images if you enter search criteria matched by more than one client’s images. You can search for images using a number of different search facilities as explained below. Many of the images held within the library are downloadable for media or are available to buy as prints. To download or order prints, you will have to fill in a simple registration procedure and follow the step-by-step instructions. Some of the client areas in the library are automatically approved for download and some require manual approval. As a registered user, you will be informed via email, when a new client area which is relevant to your interests, has been posted in the library. The images in the library are displayed initially as thumbnails. If you click on an image then you will see an enlarged preview image along with the image caption and all assigned keywords, which are used for searching. The library has a comprehensive lightbox facility that allows you to compile a group of images, save them and even send a link to your lightbox to other people for them to review. Your lightboxes can be amended and deleted at any time whilst you are using the library. If you have any comments or suggestions on how we can improve the library service please contact Info@W-W-I.com

Once your application has been approved, you will receive an email confirming that you have been granted access to download.

Keywords

What are keywords: Keywords are the industry standard way of describing or categorising images and every image in the library has a number of keywords assigned to them. These keywords are here to aid you in your search for images as they describe the content, the client, the date the photo was taken and sometimes the style or atmosphere shown in the images. You can view all of the keywords in the library by clicking on the keyword list link in the left hand menu. You can see all of the keywords that have been assigned to a specific image when you navigate to an image preview page. If you now click on one of the keywords, you will be shown a list of clients that have images with the same keyword in their home area.

Searching for Images

Browsing a Gallery: The easiest way to view images is by clicking the gallery link when in a client home area. This link will take you to the gallery page. The images are displayed as twelve thumbnails to a page. Displayed at the top of the screen are numbers indicating how many pages of images are in the gallery. To browse different pages, click on the numbers or use the next and previous links located next to them. You can speed up your search by selecting the images that are displayed either by using the dropdown menus above the images, or by using the keyword list or the Search for Images facility in the left hand menu bar.

Dropdown Menus: You can speed up your image search by selecting a category (which corresponds to selected keywords) from the dropdown menus within the image gallery. If you wish to expand your search again then select Clear selection from the dropdown menu. The dropdown menus work independently of the Search for images facility, which means that if you have refined your search using the search facility, it will clear that selection if you use the dropdown menus to perform a search.

Below is an example of how to conduct a category search via the dropdown menus:

Select a category from the drop down menu. The categories are selected keywords, which will prompt you towards certain image groupings. You will now be presented with all the images, which match that keyword within the current client area. To refine your search further, select a second category from the second drop down menu. Which keywords available in the second menu will depend on the category you chose from the first menu. To narrow your search again, select a keyword from the 'third drop down menu. Once again, the categories that are available in the third menu will depend on which category and keyword you chose from the first and second menu. You will now be presented with the images that meet all your three criteria. This is generally the quickest method of searching. If you are unsure of the keywords that would meet your search criteria, please use the keyword list link to assist you.

Search for Images facility: Every image found within the W-W-I library has a series of keywords assigned to it. You can find images by entering keywords into the search for images facility and clicking the Go button or if you have Java enabled on your computer you can press the Return key. If the keyword has been recognised, all the images that match that keyword will be displayed on one or more new pages. If you enter an unrecognised keyword then you will be taken to the keyword list page, where you will be able to see all the searchable keywords in the library. You can narrow the search further by ticking the Within results box next to the search facility, entering a new keyword, which will then search only the images which met the first search criteria. The search facility will also recognise partial words, so there is no need to search under ‘Sailing’ if you have already searched under ‘Sail’. The search facility works totally independently of the dropdown menus, which means that if you have refined your search using the drop down menus, it will clear that selection to perform the new search.

Searching by date created keyword: You can also search for images if you know the date the photographs were taken, by entering a date created keyword in the Search for images facility. The date created keyword is the date in reverse order format. For example, 20/7/2005 will be found by typing in 20050720.

Searching by image reference code: To quickly locate a particular image, you may enter the image reference code into the search for images facility. The image reference codes can be found beneath each thumbnail image in a client gallery page and image preview page.

Searching for similar images: You can search for similar images when in the image preview page, by clicking one of the keywords below the caption.

Search results with more than one client: If your search yields images from more than one client then you will be presented with a page that details which client areas have images with the searched for keyword and how many images there are within that area. Click on the client area you wish to view and you will be taken to a gallery page displaying all the images that have the assigned keyword.

Withdrawn imagery: Images may be withdrawn from the library from time to time. Generally because the supplier of the images no longer wishes for them to be used, if you believe that an image used to be on the library but is no longer, please contact us Info@W-W-I.com.

Viewing Images

How to preview an image: To preview an image, click on the thumbnail in an image gallery. You will now see an enlargement of the image, its caption and all the keywords that have been assigned to it. Once the images has been downloaded all the caption information that is embedded via the IPTC caption can be accessed using software such as: Adobe Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, Extensis Portfolio, Canto Cumulus or any of the many other programs which read the industry standard embedded File Info/ITPC

Browsing image previews: You can browse through all of the images in the gallery within the image preview page by clicking the next and previous links located above the image.

Image Captions: All of the images in the library contain a caption that contains valuable information about the image. A typical caption will give you information as to what is in the picture, names of people, objects and landmarks if relevant, where and when it was taken and for who the image was taken for. You may find that some images contain contact information for people to gain further information about the photographic shoot and press release information.

Background Display: You can change the background colour that you view the image on, to black, mid-grey or white. This will help you to view images that may have a lot of white or black content or if the image has strong colours, a mid-grey is often best.

Lightboxes

What is a lightbox?: The lightbox function allows you to make a selection of images from different galleries and store them in one place. Once you have made a lightbox selection you will then be able to save your selection and email a link to your selection to other people. From this page, you will also be able to download images and order prints. The lightbox is a temporary holding place for the images, deleting images from the lightbox does not delete them from the library. Each saved lightbox will auto delete after 60 days, so if you wish to keep the selection for longer please contact Info@W-W-I.com and we can arrange this for you.

Viewing a lightbox: Click the my lightboxes link in the left hand menu bar of any page throughout the library and this will open the my lightboxes page with the last Lightbox viewed as the default view. File Sizes: All of the images at World Wide Images are compressed JPEGs so the download size is smaller than the full, uncompressed size. Most files are available as uncompressed TIFF files if required, please contact Info@W-W-I.com. Regarding file use, there is no realistic guideline as to how large an image can be printed from digital files, as there are too many variables as to be realistic, however in the past images directly from the site have been printed as double page spreads in high quality glossy magazines. Larger sizes have been printed with careful post-production work, if you do require images to be printed at larger sizes please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we can advise you.
