2009 Skandia Sail for Gold Day 5 Roundup  [18/09/2009]

2009 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta

Press Release: For immediate use        18th September 2009

USA take first Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta golds, but Brits secure two World Cup series golds and a silver

The USA are celebrating winning the first two gold medals of the 2009 Skandia Sail for Gold regatta as they won both the Sonar and Skud-18 Paralympic classes today (Friday).

But there were also celebrations for Great Britain, who won two silver medals in the regatta and secured two golds and a silver in the overall ISAF World Cup series.

Rikk Doerr’s USA crew finished seventh and fifth in the last two races of the Sonar class – but that was enough for them to win the regatta from John Robertson’s Skandia Team GBR crew, who took silver.

However, a second place finish for Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas was enough to ensure they pipped the Doerr, Hugh Freund and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker USA crew to win the overall ISAF World Cup series.

The French crew skippered by Bruno Jourden took bronze in the regatta, with the Irish crew skippered by John Twomey, coming third in the World Cup series.

The USA crew suffered early set backs in both of today’s races that saw them having to work their way up from the back of the fleet.

Last 100 per cent record goes as Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta approaches its climax

The last 100 per cent record of the Olympic fleet racing classes at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta came to an end today (Thursday) as the event at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy approaches its climax.

Skandia Team GBR sailor Paul Goodison, the Beijing 2008 Laser gold medallist, brought to an end Tom Slingsby’s (AUS) impressive record of five wins from five races in the final Laser class race of the day.

With just two days of racing remaining, sailors in Olympic fleet racing classes will be battling it out tomorrow (Friday) to ensure they secure the top-10 positions in their respective fleets that will earn them places in Saturday’s medal races.

And tomorrow will also see the first medals of the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta won and lost, when medals in the three Paralympic classes are awarded.

Exciting racing but no changes at top of leaderboards on day three of Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta

Strong winds led to further races being abandoned on day three of the 2009 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta – but the conditions led to some exciting thrills and spills once the action got underway.

After a two-hour delay, three classes saw some racing at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy - the men’s and women’s RS:X windsurfing classes and the 49ers.

There were no changes at the very top of the leaderboards in any of the fleets at the end of the day, with Ricardo Santos of Brazil leading the men’s RS:X, Blanca Manchon heading the women’s RS:X and the Australian pair of Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen at the head of the 49er fleet

2009 Skandia Sail for Gold Day 2 Roundup  [16/09/2009]

Stormy waters can’t deter Star Brits on day two of Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta

Winds gusting up to 35 knots presented some tricky sailing conditions for crews on day two of the 2009 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy today (Tuesday).

The conditions produced what one half of Britain’s Beijing 2008 Olympic gold medal winning Star crew described as a ‘few scary moments’, but they didn’t prevent them from recording another win in their only race of the day.

The Skandia Team GBR crew of Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson extended their lead in the Star class by taking their series to two wins and a second place in three races for a total of four points.

The Polish crew of Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki finished fifth today and remain second on 11 points.

Percy said: “It’s fun to be racing in Weymouth in some big stuff. We’re a bit out of practice and there were a few scary moments today, but if you’ve sailed for 150 to 200 days in the previous year you’d be all over this. We managed to just about sneak a win today.
