Canadian solo sailor wakes to find Active House out of control doing 21
knots
WHEN you’re alone on a 60ft yacht in the depths of the Southern Ocean, thousands of miles
from land or help, the last thing you want is to lose to control of your boat. But that was the
situation facing Canadian Derek Hatfield last night when he awoke to find his Eco 60 Active
House screaming along at a dangerously quick 21 knots, struggling to cope with a Southern
Ocean squall.

wokółziemskich regat VELUX 5 OCEANS. Obecnie wszyscy zawodnicy starają się
utrzymać na obrzeżu głębokiego układu niskiego ciśnienia niosącego ze sobą
sztormowe wiatry i dużą falę, gdyż w takich warunkach trudno mówić o ściganiu, a
żegluga regatowa zamienia się w walkę o przetrwanie.....

La flotte progresse bon train dans le Pacifique Sud
Après dix jours de course dans la 3e étape du tour du monde, les concurrents de la VELUX 5
OCEANS sont déjà à mi-chemin entre la Nouvelle-Zélande et le Cap Horn.
Lentement mais sûrement, le leader Brad Van Liew continue d'augmenter son avance sur ses
poursuivants. Au classement de 12h00 UTC il devançait Zbigniew Gutkowski de 142 milles. "Je
suis assez content de cet écart", confiait l'Américain ce matin à la vacation radio. "J'essaie
toujours de naviguer au maximum du potentiel du bateau car je crois que cette étape va être
très disputée. Rien n'est joué, je n'ai pas un système météo d'avance et les autres derrière
peuvent facilement me rattraper".

BRAD VAN LIEW LOOKS AHEAD TO THE HORN AS SPRINT THREE SUMMIT
APPROACHES
Current race leader aware the hardest part is yet to come
VELUX 5 OCEANS sprint three leader Brad Van Liew has revealed he has started to plan his
rounding of the infamous Cape Horn, the most southerly tip of South America. Up until now the
43-year-old American has been focused on weather systems approaching from behind as the
VELUX 5 OCEANS fleet fly through the Southern Ocean powered east by prevailing winds.
But with less than 2,000 nautical miles to go until Brad must navigate his Eco 60 Le Pingouin
around the dangerous waters off Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago of islands that includes Cape
Horn, his thoughts have now turned to what lies ahead......

GUTKOWSKI WCIĄŻ DRUGI, PACYFIK LEPSZY NIŻ OCEAN INDYJSKI
Mija szósta doba od startu trzeciego etapu regat VELUX 5 OCEANS. Według płynącego kolejny
dzień na drugim miejscu Zbigniewa „Gutka” Gutkowskiego ten etap jest dużo przyjemniejszy niż
poprzedni. „Zrobiliśmy już prawie 2 000 mil. To naprawdę dużo w porównaniu z poprzednim
etapem, gdzie po tygodniu wciąż byliśmy 400 mil od Kapsztadu” – mówił polski żeglarz dziś
rano przez telefon.
„Poza tym Pacyfik jest dużo przyjemniejszy niż Ocean Indyjski, na razie wciąż mamy dobrą
pogodę i świetne warunki. Płyniemy bardzo szybko, prędkości, jakie osiąga Operon Racing są
w granicach 25 węzłów, co wcześniej zdarzało się tylko przy zjazdach z fali” – dodał. „Jestem
teraz na 49 stopniu szerokości geograficznej południowej, do bramki bezpieczeństwa zostało mi
225 mil, powinienem się tam znaleźć jutro wieczorem.

DEREK HATFIELD ENJOYING SOUTHERN OCEAN BATTLE IN VELUX 5
OCEANS SPRINT THREE
Oil leak is only complaint from Active House skipper
CANADIAN ocean racer Derek Hatfield said today he is relishing the tight racing after six days
at sea in the third sprint of the VELUX 5 OCEANS solo round the world race. The veteran
singlehander, currently in third position, said he was “pushing hard” to catch second-placed rival
skipper Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski, just 20 nautical miles ahead at the 0600 UTC position
report.
Derek is even more determined to hunt down the Pole after Gutek pipped him to the post in leg
two, arriving in Wellington on Operon Racing less than 36 hours ahead of Derek’s Active
House. Since the 30,000 nautical mile race restarted on Sunday

Les trois premiers concurrents de la VELUX 5 OCEANS ont accroché le dos d'une dépression
en bordure du 50e parallèle sud. Ils vont ainsi allonger la foulée à travers le Pacifique, tandis
que le quatrième et dernier bateau, Spartan est resté pris au piège d'un anticyclone.
En tête de la flotte, l'Américain Brad Van Liew creuse doucement l'écart sur ses poursuivants,
Zbigniew Gutkowski et Derek Hatfield, qui se succèdent tour à tour en deuxième position. Au
classement ce jeudi matin, le Canadien devançait le Polonais, mais en milieu de journée, Gutek
avait repris l'avantage en empannant plus tôt vers le Sud.

Zbigniew "Gutek" Gutkowski i jego Operon Racing znów płyną na drugiej
pozycji. Jeszcze dziś rano Gutek był trzeci, kilka mil za najbliższym rywalem. To dopiero
piąty dzień drugiego etapu, a zmiany pozycji i emocje jak na finiszu.
Na lądzie przyjaciele, na wodzie rywale. Gutek po kłopotach pierwszej doby wyraźnie odrabia
początkową stratę. Wczoraj pomiędzy godziną 18.00 UTC a północą Derek Hatfield wyprzedził
go o zaledwie dwie mile. Do 06.00 UTC rano jego przewaga urosła do sześciu mil, ale
ponieważ Gutek przyspieszył (jego średnia prędkość ostatniej doby to 7.9 węzła), ale dziś przed
godziną 12.00 UTC wzrosła do 12.5 węzła, co pozwoliło mu wyprzedzić Dereka o 20 mil.

Solo sailors enjoying rematch in VELUX 5 OCEANS sprint three
POLISH ocean racer Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski and Operon Racing have reclaimed second
place after it was snatched from him by race rival Derek Hatfield in the third sprint of the VELUX
5 OCEANS. Just five days into the sprint from Wellington, New Zealand, to Punta del Este in
Uruguay, the fleet have changed positions regularly as they battle it out for the top spot.
They may be friends on the dock but on the water the skippers are cut-throat in their drive to get
an advantage over one another.

Polski sternik nadrabia straty po kolizji z drzewem na starcie trzeciego odcinka etapu regat
Przemierzając dystans 325 mil morskich w ciągu ostatnich 24 godzin, zdeterminowany polski
sternik Zbigniew „Gutek” Gutkowski dał wspaniały popis swoich umiejętności i zbliżył się na
zaledwie 15 mil morskich do lidera regat VELUX 5 OCEANS Amerykanina Brada Van Liewa. Po
uderzeniu w unoszący się na wodzie pień drzewa, którego gałęzie zaczepiły się o elementy
jachtu Gutka Operon Racing, polski sternik spadł na czwartą pozycję i zwolnił nieco tempa. Po
pozbyciu się balastu okazało się, że jachty pozostałej trójki są oddalone od siebie o około 30
mil, a zatem jest jeszcze o co walczyć...
