Intertropical convergence zone plays havoc with race leaders
THEY say it’s tough at the top, and that’s something American ocean racer Brad Van Liew
knows only too well as he struggles through the Doldrums at the head of the VELUX 5
OCEANS fleet. The 42-year-old skipper of Le Pingouin has a seemingly comfortable lead of
around 80 nautical miles on his nearest rival, Polish solo sailor Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski. But
for Brad and his fellow competitors it is not just a battle against their opponents on the water – it
is a battle against nature itself.
Sweltering temperatures, unpleasant humidity, ever-changing weather conditions and severe
lack of sleep have dogged the leaders for several days after entering the Doldrums, the
notorious moving band of low pressure that runs a few hundred miles from the Equator. One
moment the ocean racers could be totally becalmed, bobbing about on a tranquil sea. The next,
without any warning, they could be in the centre of storm battling 30 knot winds and lashing
rain. This, combined with the sheer frustration of sailing alone through this area of the world,
has taken its toll on the fleet, now 12 days into their 7,400 nautical mile sprint from La Rochelle
to Cape Town.

VELUX 5 OCEANS FLEET LINE UP FOR FIRST TIMED RUN OF THE RACE
Bonus points awarded for fastest passage through set gates
THE VELUX 5 OCEANS fleet continues to spread out as the five ocean racers head towards
the Equator and their first timed run of the race. At the front of the fleet Brad Van Liew and
Zbigniew Gutkowski have been reaping the rewards for taking a more westerly route out into the
Atlantic, increasing the gap between them and Derek Hatfield in third to some 300 nautical
miles.
The leading pair have both been pushing their Eco 60 yachts equally hard as they approach the
Doldrums. Brad suffered yet another knockdown yesterday brought about by a high-speed
crash gybe, his third in seven days.

Près de 2000 milles séparent désormais le leader du dernier
“Le degré de frustration augmente à mesure que le vent tombe” résumait ce matin dans son
carnet de bord le Canadien Derek Hatfield. La flotte de la VELUX 5 OCEANS s’étale aujourd’hui
sur près de 2000 milles du nord au sud alors que cet écart était de 1500 milles dimanche
dernier quand Christophe Bullens a quitté La Rochelle.
Mais le skipper belge n’est pas le seul à perdre du terrain sur le leader. Les autres concurrents
comptent eux aussi un retard de plus en plus important et chacun tente de tirer les leçons de
ses erreurs. Ainsi Chris Stanmore-Major, parti à la côte dès les premiers jours de course, se
trouve désormais 660 milles derrière Brad Van Liew.

Na pokładach regatowych Eco 60 coraz cieplej, do równika coraz bliżej. Pierwszy wciąż
Brad Van Liew. Gutkowski powoli goni lidera i ratuje latające ryby. Derek Hatfield utknął
w słabych wiatrach, Chris Stanmore-Major też musi liczyć na zmianę warunków. Ostatni
w stawce Christophe Bullens również musi przeczekać ciszę i uporać się z technicznymi
problemami na pokładzie.
Okolice równika to rejon trudny nawigacyjnie, szczególnie w żegludze regatowej. Przesuwający
się obszar wysokiego ciśnienia obejmujący do kilkuset mil po obu stronach równika
charakteryzują z reguły słabe i zmienne wiatry oraz możliwość występowania nagłych, silnych
szkwałów wraz z gwałtownymi burzami.

Les premiers concurrents pensent déjà à l’équateur
Dans quelques jours, la flotte de la VELUX 5 OCEANS entrera dans l’Atlantique Sud et
approchera de la mi-parcours. Mais pour gagner leur droit de passage dans l’autre hémisphère,
les marins doivent d’abord traverser le fameux Pot au Noir, également appelée zone de
convergence intertropicale. À cet endroit, généralement situé entre 4 et 6 degrés Nord, les
systèmes météo des deux hémisphères se rencontrent et s’annulent. Les vents y sont donc très
irréguliers et souvent très faibles, voire inexistants. D’où ”l’effet d’élastique” sur la flotte des Eco
60 dont parlait Brad Van Liew hier, avec des leaders ralentis dans les calmes et rattrapés par
leurs poursuivants, puis un redémarrage progressif, mais pas toujours équitable…
Pour l’heure, les concurrents ont plutôt tendance à s’étaler. Le leader Brad Van Liew compte
désormais 86 milles d’avance sur Zbigniew Gutkowski, 314 sur Derek Hatfield, 578 sur Chris
Stanmore-Major et 1868 sur Christophe Bullens, qui rappelons-le quand même, a quitté La
Rochelle avec une semaine de retard. Assistera t’on à un resserrement de la flotte au Pot au
Noir ? Pas si sûr. D’après les fichiers météo, les trois premiers pourraient réussir à se faufiler
entre les mailles du filet, après quoi le piège risque de se refermer. ”Je commence à regarder la
situation pour le Pot au Noir et cela n’a pas l’air si mal”, confiait Derek Hatfield ce matin à la
vacation radio. ”Mais il faut que j’appuie sur l’accélérateur pour y arriver avant dimanche, sinon
la porte risque de se refermer devant moi, alors que Brad et Gutek passeront sans trop de
problème. Je compte bien monter dans le même train qu’eux”

Ocean racers lining up for tricky Equator crossing
THE competition - and the weather - is really starting to hot up as the VELUX 5 OCEANS fleet
press south towards the Equator. After ten days of sailing which have seen the fleet encounter a
host of weather conditions from frustrating, light breeze to strong winds and high seas, the five
ocean racers have their biggest challenge of the leg so far ahead of them: the Doldrums.
The Doldrums is one of the most challenging regions to sail through in the world: a dynamic,
moving area of high pressure found a few hundred miles either side of the equator where the
northern and southern hemispheres meet, characterised by incredibly light winds and notorious
for its sudden and unforeseen squalls and storms. Coupled with hot, humid temperatures, and
days of potentially slow progress, the Doldrums will be a huge test for the skippers.
At the head of the fleet, American solo sailor Brad Van Liew continues to stretch his lead over
the chasing pack. The latest position report at 12pm UTC put the 42-year-old from Charleston,
South Carolina, 86 nautical miles ahead of Polish ocean racer Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski as
the pair blast south past the Cape Verde Islands.

Trzy pierwsze jachty płynące w regatach VELUX 5 OCEANS zbliżają się już do Wysp Zielonego
Przylądka. Brad Van Liew i Zbigniew Gutkowski powinni już dziś minąć ten rejon, Derek Hatfield
zmienił kurs żeby również opłynąć archipelag Cabo Verde od zachodniej strony.
„Musiałem zrobić zwrot, bo nie byłem wystarczająco daleko na zachód. Zeszłej nocy płynąłem
osiem godzin w tamtym kierunku, ale dzięki temu jestem na lepszej pozycji, mogę ominąć
wyspy i ustawić się już pod odpowiednim kątem do wejścia w równikowy pas ciszy” – mówił
Kanadyjczyk dziś rano z pokładu swojego jachtu Active House.

REGATY VELUX 5 OCEANS DZIEN OSMY PRZEWAGA PINGWINA WYPADEK GUTKOWSKIEGO [26/10/2010]
Ósmego dnia regat VELUX 5 OCEANS Amerykanin umacnia swoją przewagę nad
Zbigniewem Gutkowskim, a reszta floty pozostaje zdecydowanie z tyłu. Polak miał na
jachcie drobny wypadek, ale rana została opatrzona i sytuacja na pokładzie Operon
Racing jest opanowana.
Brad Van Liew (Le Pingouin) mówił nam dziś rano: „Przez ostatnie kilka dni próbowałem płynąć
tak szybko jak się da i uzyskać trochę przewagi nad Gutkiem. Jestem w związku z tym
zmęczony, a wiatr zaczyna kręcić, ponieważ zbliżamy się do Wysp Zielonego Przylądka. Moim
zdaniem minę je w bezpiecznej odległości i nie utknę tu nigdzie bez wiatru. Mam 50 mil zapasu,
co powinno wystarczyć. Udało mi się znaleźć dosyć dobre pod względem meteorologicznym
przejście, liczę że nie stracę przewagi jaką wypracowałem.”
Sam przyznaje, że kosztowało go to sporo snu i wymagało ciężkiego wysiłku, gdyż zmuszał
jacht do pracy na granicy bezpieczeństwa: „Próbuję być ostrożny, naprawdę nie chcę żadnej
awarii. Można stracić wszystko w jednej chwili. Gutek jest dalej na zachód, jeżeli ja stanę, bez
trudu mnie wyprzedzi. Wiele będzie zależało od warunków w strefie ciszy, to będzie następna
próba”.

Polish ocean racer suffers deep cuts to forehead as fleet heads south
IT has been another day of drama for the VELUX 5 OCEANS skippers as they head further
south towards the Equator. Following on from a manic day on the water yesterday which saw
Brad Van Liew’s Le Pingouin knocked flat for the second time in days and Chris Stanmore-
Major nearly lose his headsail twice, Polish ocean racer Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski became
the first skipper to sustain a notable injury after slicing his head open on the blade of his wind
generator.
Gutek suffered several cuts to his head as he tried to clear seaweed from the rudders of his Eco
60 yacht Operon Racing. “I don’t know how bad my wounds are, but I know that I was bleeding
badly,” he said today. “At once I put on a head dressing to stop the bleeding. I couldn’t even
estimate the size of my wound because my eyes were flooded with blood and couldn’t look at
the mirror. I was really scared that I might not make it and lose consciousness because of the
blood lost.”

Le skipper polonais se blesse à la tête tandis que le leader américain double
d'efforts pour distancer ses concurrents
"Quand rien ne se passe, vous pouvez être sûr que quelque chose se prépare"... déclarait
Gutek ce matin dans son carnet de bord. Après les déboires de Chris Stanmore-Major avec ses
voiles d'avant ce week-end, voici le tour de Zbigniew 'Gutek' Gutkowski, victime de son...
éolienne ! Le skipper de l'Eco 60 Operon Racing, soucieux de dégager des algues prises dans
son safran tribord, s'est laissé surprendre par l'éolienne installée à l'arrière du bateau. Bilan de
ces quelques secondes d'inattention : une blessure à la tête, une belle marre de sang et dans
quelques semaines sans doute, une cicatrice sur le front façon Harry Potter.
"Je ne suis vraiment pas fier de moi", confiait le navigateur polonais plus tard à la vacation
radio. "J'étais en train de nettoyer les algues sur le safran et j'ai tout simplement relevé la tête
sans faire attention aux pales de l'éolienne qui tournaient ! Je ne peux pas ressortir pour
l'instant car les vagues balayent souvent le pont, le bateau gîte pas mal et je ne veux pas
mouiller la blessure. Il faut que je l'inspecte de plus près. Apparemment, c'est impossible à
recoudre et je crois que cela va laisser des traces. J'étais tellement en rage sur le moment que
j'avais vraiment envie d'arracher l'éolienne et de la balancer par-dessus bord, mais
évidemment, je ne peux pas faire ça, j'en ai trop besoin pour produire de l'électricité à bord ! Je
verrai à Cape Town pour la déplacer ou la relever un peu".
